More Than a Candle
Welcome to Smolder & Root—I’m genuinely glad you’re here. Before you explore the scents and offerings, let me tell you a little about how this came to be.
For nearly thirty years, I worked as a licensed mental health professional—a Licensed Professional Counselor with a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. I taught future counselors, sat with people in their hardest moments, and practiced as a Certified Sex Therapist through AASECT. For a long time, my purpose was clear: family and career.
Then life shifted.
When my sons left home and I stepped into semi-retirement, I found myself facing a quieter, more personal question: Now what? Purpose, I learned, isn’t something you find once and keep forever. It changes. And when it changes, you feel it—like something just beneath the surface has gone still.
I looked for that spark in familiar places—routine, relocation, even nostalgia. None of it worked. As Thomas Wolfe wrote, “You can’t go home again.” What finally did work was something simpler: curiosity.
Through reflection, travel, and creativity, I began to understand that meaning isn’t fixed—it evolves as we do. That realization led me here, to a place where creativity, intention, and care intersect. Smolder & Root was born.
This work is different—but not as different as it might seem.
For decades, I helped people slow down, sit with themselves, and make sense of their inner world. In a quieter way, that’s what I’m still doing. These candles and soaps are small, tangible rituals—ways to pause, reset, and reconnect. Scent reaches places words often can’t. It grounds us, comforts us, and sometimes brings us back to ourselves.
Each product is made with intention and care—not just to smell good, but to create a moment. A breath. A shift.
This venture also supports something deeply important to me: animals who depend on us for their care and protection. My Boston Terrier, Bruce Willis, has been a constant teacher in loyalty, presence, and the kind of connection that doesn’t need words. Because of him, a portion of every purchase goes toward organizations dedicated to animal welfare and protection.
So no—this isn’t just about candles.
It’s about creating something meaningful. It’s about connection—to yourself, to others, and to the world we share. And it’s about doing a little good along the way.
I hope what you find here feels grounding, comforting, and maybe even a little transformative.
Take your time. Look around. And know that your support reaches further than you might imagine.
As Rumi wrote, “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right-doing, there is a field… I’ll meet you there.”
Warmly,
Brian
